St John’s College Environmental Policy – What does it mean for grads?
- Recycling
The college has adopted a target of 75% recycling. What does this mean for you?
If you live in Corfield, the cleaners will only empty the communal recycling bin. The communal landfill will be your responsibility to arrange with others in your corridor. This is aimed to encourage more recycling – if you separate waste correctly, the amount of landfill should be quite small!
If you live in college-owned housing and hostels, then make sure to put the right waste into the right bins!
What Can Be Recycled:
- Anything paper and cardboard (but not tissues!)
- Anything glass
- Soft plastics: plastic bottles, bags and tubs
- Milk and juice cartons
- Metal foil and cans
- Empty aerosols
What Can’t Be Recycled:
- Crisp packets
- Wood
- Clothing and textiles
- Polystyrene
- Hard plastics e.g. toys
- Light bulbs
- Saucepans, plates, crockery

- Energy Use
The college has adopted a goal consistent with the University’s building energy efficiency target and has provisionally set a target of attaining a ‘C’-grade energy rating on its hostels.
Also, if your heating does not work, please contact the Maintenance department instead of buying your own! They will either fix the issue or provide you with an energy-efficient heater until it is fixed.
- Transport
Most people cycle or walk around Cambridge – driving is impractical, especially in the centre of town – so transport emissions here are low compared to the national average. College provides undercover bicycle storage, and the Porters keep a bicycle pump at the Forecourt Porters Lodge. With a bike you can get anywhere you need to go within Cambridge, so you really do not need a car!
The SBR also organises group bike rides to popular destinations like Ely and Grantchester.
- SBR Events
The SBR Environment Officer organises events and seminars throughout the year to raise awareness of the environment and the college’s environmental policy. They are also the SBR representative on the college Environmental Committee.
