Hi I’m Gabriel, and I’m the President of the SBR this year. I’m a third year PhD student in Plant Sciences, working on the molecular communication between rice and beneficial fungi through their roots. Outside molecular plant bio I also love books, cooking and gardening (I do like plants quite a bit if you haven’t noticed). By the way, I’m quite a big swiftie as well.

 As President, I wish to maintain and, if possible, improve the amazing atmosphere the SBR currently fosters by encouraging social and academic events that run responsibly and suit the wide range of interests of our community, from ents to yoga, swaps to movie nights. I would love to see every postgrad in John’s involved in the SBR and feeling part of our community, either just enjoying events or taking charge to run their own, maybe even joining committee. I also want everyone’s voices heard, and to represent our interests in all the relevant college committees. I believe St John’s and the SBR are incredible places to live, study and grow, and I will do all I can to keep it that way.

I’m Matt, a third-year PhD student in History. When not reading about medieval Transylvania I enjoy learning languages and eating in the Buttery.

Hi! I’m Lennie and am Secretary of the SBR this year. I’m a third year PhD student in Statistics with interests across maths and ML. This will be my seventh year at St John’s (!) – so I should be able to answer most college/Cambridge-related questions. I’m easy to spot and a regular at the buttery – do feel free to come up and say hello to me there! 😊

Hi! I’m Audrey Chan, the Academic Officer for the SBR Committee. I’m a first-year PhD student in English from Hong Kong, researching Ernest Hemingway and Joan Miró’s experimental art forms in the 1920s in Paris (Midnight in Paris is the idea!). When not working in the libraries, you’d often spot me painting in the Art Room or drinking whisky somewhere. I’ve been bringing together brilliant postgrad minds through hosting regular Grad Talks. If you’d like to share your research with the SBR community, please reach out to me and I’m always happy to offer you a platform to do so. I am also (very) eager to get us a college cat.

I’m Rhiannon, one of your Co-EDI officers. I’m a third year PhD student in Education, exploring the roles and interconnectivity between government policy, institutional culture, and personal identity on the conceptualisation of widening participation and its translation into institutional targets. My research interests are essentially exploring ways of removing inequalities in higher education contexts.

As one of your EDI officers I hope to:

• Facilitate events and community-building activities.
• Create and disseminate educational resources that promote learning around inclusivity and sharing various forms of knowledge.
• Engage with policy and governance structures to implement and embed inclusive change.
• Engage with various forms of activism such as campaigns to provide voices to our marginalised communities and advocate for change.
• Collaborate across the university to amplify voices, build communities, and share resources to maximise impact.

Hi everyone, I’m Darold, one of the EDI officers, and a first year PhD in World History (marronage preservation). I’m Robert, a first year Phd student in the Plant Sciences department. My work is primarily focused on assessing and mapping global potential for carbon sequestration in agricultural soils. In my free time, I row for St. John’s at Lady Margaret Boat Club, cook, spend time outdoors and I’m currently trying to get back into gardening. As an Environmental Officer for the SBR, I hope to promote sustainability and efficient resource uses around the college by engaging other students and hosting enjoyable events. I am Yorrick, your environmental officer! As the old-school Dutch windmill on my photo implies, I am invested with alternative energy sources to meet our global demand of reducing carbon dioxide emission. In my research I study next-generation hybrid materials for use in solar panels. Next to molecules and materials, I am also excited by basketball and music!

Hello! I’m Sneha Parmar, a second-year PhD student in Genetics and the SBR Communications and Technology Officer. I like to watch comedy movies, vibe to pop music, read Horrible Histories, and stare at the sky for no apparent reason.  I will be sending out weekly emails to keep you up to date with the happenings in college.
