Committee

SBR Committee

The SBR committee comprises elected representatives for the postgraduate community in college. They hold positions catering to different aspects of student and college life such as welfare, environment, social and academic events etc. Elections are held in Michaelmas, Lent, and Easter for positions vacated by officers after completing a 12-month term.

President

Hi I’m Gabriel, and I’m the President of the SBR this year. I’m a third year PhD student in Plant Sciences, working on the molecular communication between rice and beneficial fungi through their roots. Outside molecular plant bio I also love books, cooking and gardening (I do like plants quite a bit if you haven’t noticed). By the way, I’m quite a big swiftie as well.

As President, I wish to maintain and, if possible, improve the amazing atmosphere the SBR currently fosters by encouraging social and academic events that run responsibly and suit the wide range of interests of our community, from ents to yoga, swaps to movie nights. I would love to see every postgrad in John’s involved in the SBR and feeling part of our community, either just enjoying events or taking charge to run their own, maybe even joining committee. I also want everyone’s voices heard, and to represent our interests in all the relevant college committees. I believe St John’s and the SBR are incredible places to live, study and grow, and I will do all I can to keep it that way.

Hi! I’m Lennie and am Secretary of the SBR this year. I’m a third year PhD student in Statistics with interests across maths and ML. This will be my seventh year at St John’s (!) – so I should be able to answer most college/Cambridge-related questions. I’m easy to spot and a regular at the buttery – do feel free to come up and say hello to me there! 😊

Academic Officer

Hi! I’m Audrey Chan, the Academic Officer for the SBR Committee. I’m a first-year PhD student in English from Hong Kong, researching Ernest Hemingway and Joan Miró’s experimental art forms in the 1920s in Paris (Midnight in Paris is the idea!). When not working in the libraries, you’d often spot me painting in the Art Room or drinking whisky somewhere. I’ve been bringing together brilliant postgrad minds through hosting regular Grad Talks. If you’d like to share your research with the SBR community, please reach out to me and I’m always happy to offer you a platform to do so. I am also (very) eager to get us a college cat.

Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion Officer

Hey,

I’m Rhiannon, one of your Co-EDI officers. I’m a third year PhD student in Education, exploring the roles and interconnectivity between government policy, institutional culture, and personal identity on the conceptualisation of widening participation and its translation into institutional targets. My research interests are essentially exploring ways of removing inequalities in higher education contexts.

As one of your EDI officers I hope to:

  • Facilitate events and community-building activities.
  • Create and disseminate educational resources that promote learning around inclusivity and sharing various forms of knowledge.
  • Engage with policy and governance structures to implement and embed inclusive change.
  • Engage with various forms of activism such as campaigns to provide voices to our marginalised communities and advocate for change.
  • Collaborate across the university to amplify voices, build communities, and share resources to maximise impact.

Hi everyone, I’m Darold, one of the EDI officers, and a first year PhD in World History (marronage preservation). Excited to promote equity, diversity and inclusion (including justice and access) through frameworks of belonging, meaning, wellness and purpose, I look forward to hearing from you all on ways you want to be included, what you want to see and how John’s can continue to create a community enjoyed by all, especially in this Bicentennial year of the founding of the AntiSlavery Society, by two Johnian abolitionists, William Wilberforce and Thomas Clarkson! Don’t hesitate to get in touch!

Welfare Officer

Emily
Welfare Officer

Hello, I’m Emily, a third-year PhD student in Psychology and your dedicated welfare officer. As a psychology student, I understand the importance of mental health and well-being for postgraduate students.

My goal as welfare officer is to make it easier for you to access the resources and support you need during your studies. I will work to provide clear and readily available information on college and university resources, such as counselling and therapy. Additionally, I will serve as a confidential and anonymous first point of contact for anyone facing welfare difficulties, helping you devise a plan of action and working to destigmatise conversations around mental health challenges.

I am committed to fostering a more supportive and inclusive environment for all postgraduate students and am excited to promote well-being. Please feel free to reach out to me with any concerns or ideas on how we can make our college community an even better place for everyone.

Hi! I’m Simon, a first-year PhD student in Physics, working on ultracold quantum gases. In my free time, I love to read in libraries and occasionally paint or write stories. If you happen to spot me, most likely in the Buttery (or even the College Bar), feel free to talk to me about anything.

As a Welfare Officer, my goal is to make your journey here as smooth and enjoyable as possible. I am here to support you in accessing a wide range of welfare resources provided by the college and the university, and to organize workshops and events to maximize your wellbeing. Whether you have questions about stress management, mental health support or any other welfare-related topic, please do not hesitate to reach out to me or Emily.

In addition, I’m available 24/7 for confidential conversations. You can reach me via email (see below), and in urgent circumstances, feel free to contact me on my phone (can provide via email). Your welfare is our priority, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.

In my free time, I row for St. John’s at Lady Margaret Boat Club, cook, spend time outdoors and I’m currently trying to get back into gardening. As an Environmental Officer for the SBR, I hope to promote sustainability and efficient resource uses around the college by engaging other students and hosting enjoyable events. Please reach out to myself or Gabriel about any sustainability ideas you may have and come say hi at our next sustainability focused event!

Hi! I am Yorrick, your environmental officer! As the old-school Dutch windmill on my photo implies, I am invested with alternative energy sources to meet our global demand of reducing carbon dioxide emission. In my research I study next-generation hybrid materials for use in solar panels. Next to molecules and materials, I am also excited by basketball and music!

Associate committee memberships

Associate committee memberships are designed to promote involvement in the SBR for those of you who want to make maximum impact on the postgraduate committee without the 12-month commitment required to be a committee member. The important things to know about associate committee memberships are:

  • ZERO commitment! Associate memberships are not time-limited, so you can join for as little or as long as you want. We hope this will be particularly exciting for Masters students, who we know can’t serve on committee for a full year.
  • ZERO responsibility! There are no expectations for minimum involvement to be an associate committee member. Associates will instead be added to working groups for things they are interested in, and will be invited to volunteer for whatever tasks need doing, and to contribute ideas for growing grad life in John’s. Do as much or as little as you like, when you have the time!
  • MAXIMUM impact! Grad life at John’s is made what it is by our vibrant and exciting community getting involved at any level. We want as many people to get involved with the committee as we can, to not only help run our programme of events and socials, but to foster our communities and friendships in college. Meet new people, do something really meaningful for the college community, take ownership of your SBR, and get a snazzy title to add to your CV.

Apply here for the current academic year.
